Global navigation

I spent about 12 months exploring a redesign of USA Today's global navigation, working independently with direction from my design director. The work shipped in stages, and parts of it are live today, including on USA Today Entertainment.

Section headers carried links to many other sections. That crowded the navigation and pulled readers away from the subject they came for. A second goal was a consistent experience across desktop and mobile.

  • FocusI limited each section's navigation to categories within its subject and moved links to other sections into the drawer menu.
  • HierarchyThe drawer ranks primary sections in bold above secondary items in a lighter weight, so readers can scan it quickly.
  • Header layoutI reworked the header so the section brand and the primary navigation each have their own clear space.
Where it stands Stakeholders and my design director made the final decisions, and the design reached production piece by piece. The screens show the shipped Entertainment navigation next to a section still on the earlier design. Some concepts from the exploration were not released.

I'm selectively exploring senior creative opportunities.

If you're building something worth talking about, I'd love to hear about it.
